Ol-Karia Hot Springs, Africa’s largest Natural Health Spa

Olkaria Geothermal Spa is the first of its kind in Africa. It is located on the floor of the Great Rift Valley, about 120 KM from Nairobi, right at the heart of the Hell’s Gate National Park, which was the setting the Lion King film and adjacent to Mt. Longonot National Park.   The Centre is a product of Geothermal Power Projects at Olkaria where Kenya Electricity Generating Company Limited (KenGen) owns and operates four Power Plants. It provides the ultimate destination for revellers, away from the hustle and bustles of the city. The breath-taking scenery creates a memorable experience. It is the perfect tourist destination.

The spa consists of 3 cascading ponds that receive geothermal water collected from various wells inside the Olkaria geothermal field. The first is the receiving pond. It receives hot geothermal water with temperatures of approximately 90 degrees centigrade. It is unsuitable due to its high temperatures. The Second pond fills up from the overflow of the first pond and has temperatures of about 60 degrees centigrade, also unsuitable. The third and largest pond receives the overflow of the second pond and overpass from the first pond. Its temperatures range between 30-40 degrees.

Measuring 70 metres long and 40 metres wide, the Olkaria spa is larger than an Olympic size swimming pool. It has a smaller one 10 metres long for children. The opening of the spa adds to the delights of Hell’s Gate National Park in which it is located, and which already attracts many local and foreign tourists annually. The spa is located west of the Olkaria II power plant.

he spa is expected to promote balneology — therapy by hot and warm baths in natural mineral waters, spas and cures. The spa water is naturally rich in minerals, the major one being sulphur.
